This comparison highlights key differences in the processes captured by the numerical model and the flume experiment that can be used to improve numerical modeling of delta-plain channel dynamics. MTS System Corp (USA) is responsible for the construction of the wave generator. ![]() Ballast Nedam Infra is building the Delta Flume. A Monte Carlo framework accounts for uncertainty in the numerical modeling parameters, and graph theory provides the tools for comparing channel network morphology between the flume and DeltaRCM realizations. The new Delta Flume will be completed in November 2013 and replaces the existing flume at the other test location of Deltares in Markenesse. In this work I present a framework for comparing flume experiments to numerical models derived from the DeltaRCM model in terms of their channel network morphology. However, a quantitative comparison of flume experiment deltas and numerically modeled deltas is lacking. Flume experiments, while not perfect representations of field-scale deltas, provide observations at human time-scales that can be used to make careful inferences about field-scale processes. Numerical models of delta evolution help quantify the morphologic evolution of a delta, but as with all geologic models it remains difficult to validate how well a numerical model captures the relevant processes. Understanding how deltas evolve over time allows for better urban planning, environmental sustainability, and water resource management. The project has been created by the excavation of the sand plateau around the Delta flume, creating a 22-foot-high, 850-foot-long (7-meter-high, 250-meter-long) delta work. The Flood Protection Program is the main funder on the research. The experiments in the Delta Flume run in parallel to a series of small-scale geotechnical experiments, model simulations and the construction of a small test dyke in the field near one of the Clay Ripener.Over half a billion people throughout the world live on deltas. Advice is provided by the Clay Ripener project group led by the Province of Groningen, the workgroup for dyke improvement with locally sourced clay (POV-DGG), and Wetterskip Fryslân. This project is a collaboration between the Water authority Hunze en Aa’s and EcoShape partners Deltares, van Oord and Boskalis. If we can construct some of the dikes with locally extracted clay from sludge, it will make a huge difference in costs, in environmental impact and in nuisance caused by transport of clay from afar”. Erik Wagener, director of the Flood Protection Program: “We are working in a unique collaboration between the government and the 21 water boards on the largest dyke improvement operation since the Delta Works: the reinforcement of at least 1,300 kilometers of dyke and 500 locks and pumping stations. The forest existed of 32 willow trees that were placed in 16 rows of 2 to. If the trial is successful, it will be of great benefit to the total dyke reinforcement task for the rest of the Netherlands. We constructed a real-scale willow forest in a wave flume of 300 m long, 5.0 m wide and 9.5 m deep. ![]() ![]() The entire study will be completed in 2022. We kept the model flume still for 24 hours after its preparation was finished in order to complete drainage consolidation. The results will also increase the predictability and applicability of locally extracted dyke material in the Netherlands and abroad. flume, avoiding the formation of erosion pits on the surface of the soil mass during the water-filling process due to high water-filling speed, and we stop adding water when the height of the water filling reached 40 cm. With the results from this trial, the water authority can improve the design of the Broad Green Dyke, assuring its safety. It is further reinforced with clay obtained by ripening salty dredge sediments in only three years. The Broad Green Dike is a dyke with a gentler slope than standard dykes. Water authority Hunze en Aa’s intends to beneficially use this clay to strengthen the seawall in the North of the Netherlands near the German border into a so-called Broad Green Dyke, contributing to key societal ambitions such as flood safety, climate adaptation, circularity and water quality. The tests are part of an extensive study to verify the safety of a dyke reinforced with clay ripened from locally available salty dredge sediment.
